此次水下考古调查项目将历时60天，由国家文物局考古研究中心、山东省水下考古研究中心、中国甲午战争博物院和威海市博物馆，并调集来自山东、广东的水下考古队员，以及广州打捞局人员联合组队。
2023年度调查工作将在2022年物探工作基础上，对旅游码头南部海域的来远舰遗址进行抽沙揭露。本项目通过抽沙发掘，将初步明确该舰保存状况和分布情况等信息，为甲午海战史和世界海军舰艇史的研究提供珍贵的考古实物资料。
